There is a common misconception among small business owners: “I don’t need to worry about website security. I’m just a local accountant/florist/consultant. Why would a hacker target me?”
It sounds logical. You aren’t a bank. You aren’t holding state secrets. You aren’t Amazon.
But this line of thinking assumes that hackers are human beings sitting in a dark room, specifically choosing who to attack. In 2026, that isn’t how it works.
Most website attacks are automated. They are scripts (bots) that crawl the internet 24/7, testing millions of websites for known vulnerabilities. They aren’t looking for you; they are looking for an open door.
And if your WordPress site hasn’t been updated in six months, your door is wide open.
The “Open Door” Problem
WordPress is great because it is popular. But because so many sites use it, hackers spend a lot of time looking for holes in the code.
When a security hole is found in WordPress, the developers are usually very quick to fix it. They release an “Update.”
That little notification in your dashboard is telling you something important. It is saying, “We found a way hackers can get in, and we have fixed it. Click here to close the hole.”
If you ignore that update, you are running code that hackers know how to break. It is like leaving your office windows unlocked in a rough neighbourhood where burglars try every handle just to see what happens.
Prevention vs Cure
Many business owners skip website maintenance to save a bit of money. But in reality, skipping maintenance usually costs more in the long run.
Think of it like dental care. It is much cheaper to brush your teeth every day than it is to pay for a root canal after your tooth has rotted.
If your site gets hacked, it is expensive to fix. You have to pay emergency rates to a developer to clean the database, remove the virus, and restore the site. That can easily run into hundreds of pounds. That doesn’t even include the money you lost while your site was offline.
What actually happens when a site gets hacked?
If a bot gets into your site, it rarely puts up a skull and crossbones picture. Modern hacks are much sneakier.
- The Google Warning: Google detects the virus and puts up a giant red screen to visitors saying “Deceptive Site Ahead.” This kills trust instantly.
- The SEO Hijack: Hackers hide invisible links on your pages. Suddenly your business website is selling illegal pills or gambling services to Google. This destroys your search rankings.
- The Data Leak: Even if you don’t take payments, you probably have a contact form. Weak spots can expose the names and emails of everyone who has ever contacted you. Not only does this put their data risk, you also have to report it to the ICO (in the UK) and inform your customers that their data was leaked. This can be quite costly and damage your reputation.
It isn’t just about hacks
Even if you are lucky enough to avoid a hack, an unmaintained site will eventually break on its own.

Websites have lots of moving parts. Your theme, your plugins, and your hosting software all need to talk to each other. As technology moves forward, older plugins stop working.
We often see “Silent Failures.” This is where the website looks fine to you, but it is actually broken.
For example, a customer might fill out your “Request a Quote” form. They click send. The page refreshes. But because of a software conflict, the email never actually sends. You never got the lead and the customer thinks you are ignoring them.
Why “Just clicking update” isn’t enough
You might be thinking you will just log in once a month and click “Update All.”
While this is better than doing nothing, it is still risky. Updates can sometimes clash with each other.
You might click update, the screen goes white, an error message appears telling you there’s been a critical error, and the site crashes because one plugin doesn’t like the new version of another plugin. If you haven’t taken a full backup before clicking that button, getting your site back online can be a headache.
Even if you do have a backup, if you don’t know how to restore it your site will be offline while you learn how to do this. Depending on the system used, backups can be slow to restore. If you have a poor quality web host, you might find that it times out and stops allowing you to restore the site. Causing more frustration, and all while your site is down you’re losing customers (and possibly ranking).
The Professional Approach
Website security isn’t something you can do once and forget about. A secure website needs a routine:
- Regular backups: So you can hit “undo” if something breaks.
- Uptime monitoring: So you know instantly if the site goes offline.
- Managed updates: Checked by a human to ensure nothing breaks.
- Firewall protection: To block the bots before they even reach the door.
- User access control: Keeping logins tidy, removing old users, and using strong passwords and two‑factor login where possible, so ex‑staff or hackers can’t slip in.
- Spam & form protection: Protection for contact forms and comments to cut fake enquiries and spam, which can hide real leads or potentially contain phishing scams.
- Malware scanning & clean‑ups: Regular scans to catch hacked files or strange code before it does real damage, plus a clear plan to fix issues quickly.
